On my way home from school on Friday, the first day of my
spring break, Dad called me to see if I wanted to go racing. I knew it
was too cold and snowy to ride in Indiana so we would have to travel
south. He informed me that Hidden Valley MX in Burlison, TN was racing
but we would have to leave as soon as I got home. We loaded up the Unbound
Energy / TeamVRM.com bikes and took off. We slept in the van Friday night
and practiced all day Saturday. It was my first time on an outdoor track
so it took a little while to get my speed up. By the end of the day I was
feeling pretty good.
On Sunday, I was feeling fairly confident and
comfortable on the track. I got great starts pulling all four holeshots!
I led every lap and went on to win the 125A and 250A classes. The track
was great all weekend and it felt good to get my speed up again and I was
able to give Unbound Energy and TeamVRM.com some plugs at the track.
We got home Sunday night late and I had
planned on leaving Monday to do some riding in FL for the week. I got my
bike cleaned up, and with my friend Kent Gross we left for Fl. around 2:00 in
the afternoon. We were planning on practicing at the many tracks down
there and spend some time mountain biking. On our way down, we were
talking about Daytona Bike Week and how the GNCC was coming up. I called
a friend who got on the Internet for me to find out all the details. The
race was on Tuesday and we still had 13 hours to drive. We decided it
would be really fun to race the Amateur race, but we knew we would have to
drive all night. I took the first leg while Kent slept. He took
over at the Fl. line and took us all the way to Vero Beach, Fl. We pulled
in at 5:30 in the morning. We got about 3 hours sleep and were on the
line at 10. I decided to ride the Sportmans class in the morning race
since I have been off the bike for so long. There were some other people
that were thinking just like me because there were 105 entries in my class
alone. I was just going to go out and have fun. I had no
expectations.
On the start, my bike started first kick
and I went into the first turn in the top 10. I made a few quick moves
and I knew I was towards the front. On the first lap I was in 2nd.
I kept pushing and the sand was getting super rough. On the 2nd lap the
board showed I was in the lead. I had to make a pit stop and gas myself
since I did not have anybody there to help me. Kent was in the same race
I was. I filled and up and did not lose any positions. I kept the
hammer down and made it the entire 2 hours. I came across the finish line
and the board showed that I had won. It was great. I was so pumped
because I am not an off road rider and I was running on very little
sleep. It was a great experience. We rode the rest of the week on
some MX tracks and I am starting to feel really good on the bike. I just
got my new Unbound Energy / TeamVRM.com graphics and I am getting excited for
this summer's racing and showing my rides off.
